In August of 1995 founder Jeff Sands opened Mile-Hi Skydiving Center at the Longmont Airport just 30 miles northwest of Downtown Denver. As an avid skydiver and pilot himself, Jeff's goal was to open the first turbine aircraft powered skydiving center or “drop zone” in Colorado. Nestled against the rocky mountain front range and Long's peak in the backdrop, Mile-Hi Skydiving is one of the most beautiful places to skydive anywhere.
Starting out of a construction trailer with just a few people on weekends, Mile-Hi Skydiving began its journey to become the largest skydiving facility within 600 miles of Denver. Now with 6 large hangars, 4 full time aircraft, its own maintenance facility, and over 50 people on staff, Mile-Hi Skydiving is easily considered to be a destination drop zone.
Since day one, Mile-Hi Skydiving has been proud to honor our fallen heroes by skydiving into the Bolder Boulder Memorial Day Race flying in the flag of each military branch and of course the American Flag.
Mile-Hi Skydiving is home to the NFL's only skydiving team, the Denver Broncos Thunderstorm. Beginning in 2008, Thunderstorm has given fans at Mile High Stadium in Denver the thrill of high speed "swooping" at over 50mph by some of the world's best skydiving canopy pilots.Thunderstorm has drawn the attention of national news media including CBS News, NBC Today Show, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and the NFL Network.
Because of the famed Denver Broncos Thunderstorm, in 2023 the NBA asked Mile-Hi Skydiving to skydive in the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy to kick off the NBA finals in downtown Denver.
Over the years, Mile-Hi Skydiving has grown into a first-class skydiving center. We have made over 200,000 tandem jumps and nearly 1 Million total skydives. We have participated in world-record formation jumps, contracted for military training exercises, and twice been the location for the United States Parachute Association (USPA) National Canopy Piloting Championships.
In 2003 Jeff passed away and together with Jeff Sand's family and the Community Foundation of Boulder County, Mile-Hi Skydiving set up an endowment fund in Jeff Sands name. In 2024 the Jeff Sands Memorial Blue Skies Fund will have given back to the needs of the local community in excess of $1 Million. We are proud to honor Jeff's name in this way and also continue his legacy of having the best skydiving Colorado has to offer.
